Abstract

As we know that the hairs are an integral part of the human beauty which is protective appendages of the body integument with sebaceous glands and sweat glands. To maintain the growth and integrity of hair we have to clean the hair and scalp daily for proper development. For this we use various types of shampoos like herbal shampoo, anti-dandruff shampoo, conditioning shampoo etc. shampoo is nothing but preparation of surfactant with the combination of active ingredient in the form of powder, liquid, semisolid solution to clean, beautify, condition the scalp by removing dirt, dust, unwanted particles without affecting scalp, hair. In this article we are going to review about preparation method of herbal shampoo, need of herbal shampoo, Various uses of herbal shampoo and products which are available in the market.

Introduction

A shampoo is defined as a preparation of a Surface Active agent in the form of liquid, solid, or powder which are used under the conditions specified to remove surface grease, dirt, and skin debris from the hair, shaft, and scalp without adversely affecting the hair, scalp or the health of the user.(1) Shampoos are widely used cosmetic products for cleaning and beautifying hair which also changes the hair texture and provides nutrients to it beautiful.(2) now many chemical, and synthetic shampoos are available in the market but they also have so many side like hair loss problems and hair damage, so to avoid these damages many consumers use herbal shampoos. (3) Herbal shampoos contains plant-based ingredients in the form of botanical extracts, essential oils, and other organic compounds instead of their conventional counterparts.(4) The use of shampoo is to remove the undesirable dirt, dust increased in between the hair without stripping out and Cleaning the hair.(5)The basic idea of hair growth enhancing & conditioning shampoo is lies in the Rigveda, Yajurveda, Ayurveda, Unani, and Homeopathic systems of medicine where these are the products in which herb is used in crude or extract form. (6) Hair is also known as epidermal derivative as they are originated from the epidermis during embryological development. It is an appendage on the body, integument with sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and nails derived from the skin ectoderm. (7) Hair is a protein filament grows from follicles found in the dermis, or skin which define the characteristics of mammals. To increase the hair integrity products which increase hair volume, reduce frizz, improve hair manageability, and stimulate new hair growth must be used. (8)

Need of Shampoo:

A shampoo is a solution of a detergent with suitable additives for hair conditioning, lubrication, medication which are safe and free from side effects. (9) Ravichandran et.al (2004) reported the clinical efficacy and safety of “Herbal Antidandruff Shampoo’ in the management of dandruff. A polyherbal shampoo containing the extracts of Rosmarinus officinalis, Vetiverla zizanioides, Nigella sativa, Santalum album, Ficus bengalensis, Citrus limon, and oil of Melaleuca leucadendron was used in the study. Which conclude that the test formulation is effective due to the synergistic anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and local immunostimulatory actions of its ingredients. (10)

Ideal Properties of Herbal Shampoo:

  1. It should be easily removed on rinsing with water.
  2. It should not make the hand rough and chapped.
  3. It should not cause any side effects/irritation to the skin or eye.
  4. It should leave the hair non?dry, soft, lustrous with good manageability and minimum fly-away
  5. It should produce a good amount of foam to satisfy the psychological requirements of the user.
  6. It should effectively and completely remove dust or soil, excessive sebum or other fatty substances, and loose corneal cells from the hair. (12)

Steps involved in Preparation of Shampoo:

  1. Collect, authenticate the herbal plant material which is going to used as key material.
  2. Clean, Dry, grind the plant and accurately weigh the required amount of plant powdered using digital weighing balance.
  3. Make a solution of powdered extract by maceration or other extraction methods, add a thickening agent if required and mix the solution properly.
  4. Shake continuously at a time interval of 20min for better mixing of ingredients in the solution.
  5. Heat the solution properly by heating mental in a container and add sufficient quantity of cleansing agent which maintain the pH balance and used for cleaning purpose.
  6. Add few drops of aromatic agents/ aroma using dropper to impart few plaseant fragrance to the sample solution.
  7. Add preservative to increase the stability and half life of the prepared herbal shampoo.
  8. Then lastly check the pH level of prepared shampoo and adjust the pH with suitable pH buffer.
  9. Then lastly perform various evaluation tests of prepared shampoo for its quality, stability, pH effectiveness. (14)

As we already know in market there are number of synthetic shampoos are available but they also have various side effects and as in ayurveda we use various herbal plants for various diseases or disorders we can also use these herbal plants for maintaining the hair integrity in the form of herbal shampoos. Herbal shampoos are nothing but the medicinal products prepared from herbal plant or part of plant as active ingredient with other additives in the form of solid, liquid or semi-solid form to clean, beautify, induce growth, reduce hair fall and maintain the integrity of the hairs. In this article we reviewed some of the points like herbal shampoos, the various types of herbal shampoos on the basis of function, on the basis of appearance and on the basis of origin and also studied their uses like cleaning, maintaining hair growth, reduce hair fall, acts as anti-dandruff, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial etc., we also reviewed the process of preparation of herbal shampoo and some off marketed herbal products like Rivona hair shampoo moisturizes the hair, Vatika shampoo acts as anti-dandruff, Himalaya hair shampoo strengthens the hair roots and reduce damages of hairs, Sesa shampoo reduce hair fall, lotus herbal shampoo reduce hair fall and maintain the pH of scalp, herbal essences reduce discoloration of hair, biotique shampoo acts as anti-hair fall and Indulekha Bringha hair cleanser reduce hair fall and increase blood circulation.
