Dandruff is a skin condition that mainly affects the scalp. It occurs due to fungal infection, excess sebum production, and poor hygiene. Most anti-dandruff shampoos contain chemicals that irritate and harm the hair and scalp in the long run. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to formulate and test a herbal anti-dandruff shampoo containing papaya leaf extract, curry leaves, and coconut oil. Papaya leaves have enzymes that destroy fungi, while curry leaves have antioxidants and strengthen hair. In addition, coconut oil is a natural moisturizer and antiseptic. After formulating the product, its physical and chemical characteristics were measured, including pH, viscosity, foam stability, dirt suspension capacity, and stability. The findings showed that the shampoo performed well in cleansing, foaming, and was safe for the scalp. From the results obtained, it is clear that herbs are a viable alternative to commercial anti-dandruff products.
Dandruff is a very common scalp disease, which is associated with itching, flakiness, and irritation of the scalp. Dandruff is typically caused by certain fungi, such as Malassezia, which interfere with the balance on the scalp. The excessive use of synthetic shampoos with artificial surfactants and chemicals has increased the risk of scalp sensitiveness, dryness, and hair damage. Nowadays, herbal products have become increasingly popular because of their effectiveness and low potential for adverse reactions. Herbal shampoos are made from plant-based components, which not only clean the scalp but also nourish hair and protect against dandruff. Papain, an enzyme found in papaya leaves, contributes to exfoliating the scalp and has an antifungal effect. Curry leaves are abundant in antioxidants, vitamins, and other important minerals, which improve the health of hair follicles and decrease scalp infections. Finally, coconut oil is known for its moisturizing and antimicrobial properties.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
2.1 Materials
Fresh papaya leaves
Fresh curry leaves
Coconut oil
Sodium lauryl sulphate (or herbal surfactant base)
Glycerine
Citric acid
Preservative (if needed)
Distilled water
2.2 Preparation of Plant Extracts
The fresh papaya leaves and curry leaves collected were carefully washed in distilled water to clean them from dirt and other foreign particles. The leaves were dried in the shade for some days after which they were grinded to make a coarse powder. The obtained powder was extracted through ethanol or distilled water. The extracts were then filtered.
2.3 Preparation of Herbal Shampoo
For the preparation of the herbal shampoo, the obtained plant extracts were mixed with the surfactant base. Coconut oil was used as a conditioner in the formulation. Glycerine was used to retain moisture. To control the pH level of the formulation, citric acid was added.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
The herbal shampoo formulation had favourable physical properties that included pleasant smell and proper viscosity. Its pH was within acceptable limits for use on the scalp and would not cause any form of irritation. The amount of foam produced indicated its efficiency in cleansing. The inclusion of natural ingredients ensured that the scalp remained healthy and the incidence of dandruff was minimized. The antifungal and nourishing properties of papaya leaf extract and curry leaves, together with the moisturizing property of coconut oil, enhanced the ability of the formulation to control dandruff without any adverse effects. It was more efficient than other commercial shampoos.
CONCLUSION:
In the current study, it was possible to demonstrate the successful preparation and evaluation of herbal anti-dandruff shampoo from papaya leaves, curry leaves, and coconut oil. Natural ingredients utilized in the process possessed favourable qualities such as antifungal activity, antioxidant quality, and moisturization, which are required for scalp management and dandruff control. Moreover, the physicochemical parameters of the resulting shampoo proved to be adequate – it displayed satisfactory pH level, good lathering capacity, proper viscosity, and stability. In addition, natural materials minimize risks of the side effects usually observed when using synthetic products. Papaya leaves and curry leaves help nourish scalp and reduce flakiness, whereas coconut oil improves the conditioning process, and prevents excessive dryness. All in all, the study proves that herbal formulations are promising alternatives to existing products, and provide many opportunities for further work and improvement. For example, future research can explore mass production, clinical trials, and introduction of other herbal ingredients to increase effectiveness of the shampoo.
